DSCL's 10th Anniversary: A Gala of Gratitude and Understanding

By outgoing DSCL Vice President, Fisnik Musa

Agnes Fenyvesy, the spouse of a Hungarian diplomat, arrived in London in 2012 to accompany her husband on his first posting abroad. As a government employee in her home country, she faced the challenge of being without a job and a daily routine. After a short period of exploring London, she realised she needed to engage herself more, both personally and within the diplomatic community she was part of. This led to the idea of founding a club that would serve as a centre for support and collaboration.

“I definitely did not wish to sit out four years in London, waiting for the posting to end, and move on with an empty shell of a feeling. That is when the idea of an association emerged, to be a body of mutual support for like-minded souls here. To establish a group dedicated to the international diplomatic community posted in this beautiful city, fostering friendship and understanding between different cultures, while exploring London together,” explained Agnes during the gala dinner held on Friday 21 February. In her welcome speech, the founder of the club wanted to name one special person for a decade of dedication: Carmen Davies. Recently granted the title of Emeritus Member (EM) in recognition of her long-standing contributions to the club, Carmen has always been a huge support to the founder, and the board members that followed. Through her dedication and active engagement, she has played a pivotal role in shaping and strengthening DSCL over the years.

Exactly ten years on from Agnes’s founding of the club, in the magnificent setting of Dartmouth House, DSCL celebrated its 10th anniversary, bringing together many guests, club members, and sponsors who made this special gathering possible.

Over the past decade, DSCL has welcomed and supported numerous spouses of ambassadors, high commissioners, and diplomats posted to London, by organising various activities, visits, and meetings that have enriched their experiences of living in the capital. Most importantly, DSCL has served as a home away from home for many members of the diplomatic community, helping to foster a sense of belonging and support.

Maria Asuncion Cancela Silva, the outgoing president of DSCL, who, along with the board, has worked with great dedication to bring numerous activities to the diplomatic community, expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm during her speech at this significant event: “As we come together, I would like to remark on some essential words during this anniversary celebration.

“First, gratitude. Without gratitude, we cannot expect generosity, and without generosity, we lose the reasons to be grateful. These concepts are intertwined, reflected in the design of our tenth anniversary logo. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the British institutions and local brands whose generous support we cherish. We are truly grateful to welcome you into our family tonight.

"Next, I want to emphasise understanding. Celebrating this anniversary at Dartmouth House, home of The English-Speaking Union, an institution that aligns with the mission and values of the DSCL, allows us to reflect on this vital concept. Promoting understanding goes beyond merely speaking the same language; it requires good practices, positive intentions, and a constructive attitude toward finding common ground in our shared values."

The celebration of this anniversary is a testament to DSCL's success and significance for the diplomatic community in London. Since its foundation, the club has counted on the constant support of Elizabeth Stewart, the Director of Programmes and Content at the Embassy Network, who acted as master of ceremony at the dinner. The club continues to be a dynamic hub that connects people from different cultures and backgrounds, strengthening the sense of cooperation and friendship among diplomats and their families.

This celebration would not be possible without the generous support of our friends and sponsors who have been part of this incredible 10-year journey.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to:

Neil Herrington from Cognita Schools
Ken Ebenezer and Laura Shepherd from Roomservice by CORT
